Some people may be wondering what in the world is Hippotherapy? Therapy with a hippo?……NO! Hippotherapy is the use of horseback riding as a therapeutic or rehabilitative treatment, especially as a means of improving coordination, balance and strength. The horse’s pelvic movements mimic that of a human and can provide a steady, rhythmical input during mounted activities. The horse takes approximately 2,500 steps over 30 minutes, providing intense repetition and practice for the rider’s neuromotor system. In addition, the motivation of being on/around a horse has been noted to increase motivation of the clients to participate in more challenging tasks in this setting.
