Now that summer weather is here, water safety is critical for children with special needs. Many kids are drawn to water and some are unable to understand the dangers associated with it.
Tips for keeping kids safe around the water
1. Start Early
It is important to expose children to water and to teach the importance of water safety. Use visuals and/or social stories to teach rules and help comprehension.

4. Take Precautions
If you own a pool or live near one, be sure the pool is gated and inaccessible at all times. Put door/window alarms if you live near a body of water. Never leave a child unsupervised around water including pools, lakes, oceans and rivers/streams.
